Rose added: “Combining the wit of the Beatles, the power of The Rolling Stones and the outrage of The Sex Pistols, Frankie Goes To Hollywood went from unemployed Liverpudlians to Kings of pop on the back of their epic banned record Relax. We can’t think of anyone better than Bernard Rose, and our talented young lead, Callum Scott Howells, to bring this iconic moment in pop history to life. Partnering with Working Title to bring their story to the screen is incredibly exciting. Luc Roeg of Independent Entertainment commented: “Frankie Goes To Hollywood were an unflinching ground-breaking band that paved the way for so many young performers today. ![]() The drama scored 12 BAFTA nominations, including a best supporting actor nod for Howells. Howells was one of the breakout stars of Channel 4’s lauded ’80s-set Aids crisis drama It’s A Sin. The movie will explore the song’s genesis and impact. In the U.S., the song reached number 10 on the Hot 100 and was voted best song of the year by listeners to LA’s KROQ station. It subsequently went on to top the UK Singles Chart for five weeks and become the sixth best-selling UK single of all time. It wasn’t too long before the shirts made it across the Atlantic to a teenage audience more-than-eager to shell out the cash for them. All of a sudden the shirts were not only cool, they were also subversive. Of course, it didn’t hurt that in January 1984, the BBC banned the song “Relax” from all its TV and radio outlets. They were, predictably, an overnight sensation, and teens throughout Britain clamored to get them, sporting one of three different slogans: ‘Frankie Say Relax’, ‘Frankie Say War! Hide Yourself’, and ‘Frankie Say Arm the Unemployed’. Paul Morley, who founded ZTT Records (FGTH’s label), is credited with the design, basing it on almost-identical shirts by British designer Katharine Hamnett.
